Royal Mail Ends Free Shipping Labels – What You Need To Know

label-changes

From 19 January 2026, an important change affected businesses that use Royal Mail’s Click & Drop platform.

Royal Mail has updated its terms and conditions to discontinue the free supply of shipping labels for business customers. This means companies that previously received complimentary labels will now need to purchase their own labels independently.

For many businesses, this represents a shift in both cost and responsibility – but with the right supplier, it doesn’t need to be a problem.

What Has Changed?

Until now, Royal Mail provided shipping labels at no extra cost for certain business customers. Under the revised policy:

  • Free labels will no longer be supplied
  • Businesses using Click & Drop must source their own labels
  • Labels must remain compatible with Royal Mail’s systems

In practical terms, this means businesses must now ensure they have a reliable supply of 4″ x 6″ direct thermal shipping labels that work seamlessly with their printers and Royal Mail’s software.

What Labels Do You Need?

To remain compliant with Royal Mail’s Click & Drop platform, your labels should be:

  • 4″ x 6″ (102mm x 152mm)
  • Direct thermal (no ink or ribbon required)
  • Suitable for desktop and industrial label printers
  • Supplied on the correct core size for your printer

Using the wrong label type can cause scanning issues, print quality problems and delays in dispatch.
